Berlin is one of sixteen states of the Federal Republic of Germany
and is the largest city in Germany with a population of 4.3 million
within the greater metropolitan area and 3.4 million within the
city limits. This makes it the second most populated city in the
European Union.
Berlin is a political and cultural capital which has had a turbulent
and eventful history. The events of the past have left their mark
on the cityscape - and the city is still changing today. “Berlin
is always in the process of becoming”, remarked historian
Karl Scheffler, and this is one of the traits that makes it one
of Europe’s most vibrant, exciting and colourful capitals.
Berlin has a vibe and excitement all of its own, and wherever you
go, you can experience the pulsating life on the boulevards, in
the art galleries and at the flea markets, and in the city’s
300 clubs and 7,000 bars and restaurants - many of which are open
around the clock.
The city’s economy is strong and is primarily based on the
service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries,
media corporations, environmental services, congress and convention
venues. Berlin also has a thriving tourism industry and is the third
most visited tourist destination in the EU.
Berlin is served by three commercial airports: Tegal International
Airport (AXL), Tempelhof International Airport and the largest Schönefeld
International Airport (SXF), which lies just outside Berlin’s
South Eastern border in the state of Brandenburg. Berlin’s
airport authority plans to transfer all of Berlin’s air traffic
in 2011 to a greatly expanded airport at Schönefeld, which
will be renamed Berlin Brandenburg Airport. There are regular flights
daily to Berlin from most UK airports. The flight time is around
two hours from th UK.
